What makes you immersed in stories?

To me I need to get to know the world and settings first, doesn't matter if it's a mystery story or comedy, I need to feel the world a little bit. If the world is based on real life or it's a fictional one, I need to understand it. So having some outdoors scenes are crucial to me. I don't care much about worldbuilding in details, but like everything, it depends on the story.

Good characters to me depends a lot of the works, but being consistent is really important. Generally doesn't matter how much a character is doing for the plot, how much plot oriented that story is, I won't get immersed on them or care about anything if it looks like they just exist on-screen and when the scene ends, I have no clue of what they are doing, where they could be and who they could be with. It looks like the character ceases to exist. Knowing where and what every character is doing is so important to make them feel alive, to feel like they belong to that world with others characters. I don't need the story to always mention this, but if I can have an idea is already enough.

One popular example I can give is One Piece. I used to read and watch it when I was much younger, nowdays I don't really care anymore, I just read some summaries once in a while because I just want to know how it will ends... But I'll never forget how immersive that big world was? The worldbuilding isn't even detailed or anything, but the base created by Eiichiro Oda was enough to me, it helps me to have an idea of what almost all the character are doing or where they are. Like most of the side characters have places them belong and an established life that progresses.

The author also tells me that through his "Cover Stories", portraying an single image showing how the several characters are doing. Oda also brings back old characters a lot of times (recently not so much) and it makes the world so lively? Is was so cool to see side character meeting each other for the first time and having immersive conversations about what they were doing. While we are adventuring with the Straw Hats I could imagine where many characters were or even try to guess, because I knew Oda would remember them at some point and mention it.
